Same-sex couples have been rushing to their county clerks’ offices since Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision that granted gay and lesbian couples nationwide a constitutional right to marry.

But while clerks in some states have moved swiftly to start complying with the court’s decision, others are still catching up. And in some jurisdictions, state officials — including the attorneys general of Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana — are dragging their heels and searching for ways to flout the ruling.

But even the most recalcitrant officials are likely to comply “very quickly” with the Supreme Court’s decision, said Ira Lupu, a professor emeritus of constitutional law and religion at George Washington University Law School. Read more…
